Here is my latest design of box. Click on the link to download the box templates to try them out for yourself. Follow the instructions below to see how the old format and new format boxes are made.

This is my latest box solution. It is used in the forthcoming Jolly Roger model. I'm sure it will continue to evolve. I've changed the box format for a couple of reasons. On printed models there is inevitably a limit to the amount of space. I have been looking at the bottom of the box and thinking that it is rather wasteful of card. This solution has no base but is still satisfyingly rigid. It also sits nicely on the table - on models with a card base, especially a large base, there is a tendency for the base to bow out slightly, this causes the model to sit slightly high on the table and rock ever so slightly. Also, with the open base I have full access to the mechanism inside the box. Instructions for construction follow.

Original Box Construction

(1) Glue the two halves of the box together as shown.

(2) Fold down the ends and glue them into place.

(3) Fold back the four inner flaps and glue their backs to the inside of the box - Box complete!
 
New Style Box Construction  
Box 1
(1) Fold over the end two flaps and glue them down as shown.

(2) Glue on the two box ends.

(3) Glue up the box sides and ends.

Box 4
(4) Glue the two flaps into place onto the grey areas making sure that the box stays square.

(5) Glue the backs of the inner tabs into place on the inside of the box. Box complete. Let me know what you think.
